What people say .......

In over 30 years working in the game fishing industry I have passionately kept up-to-date with new developments in rod manufacturing.

With the almost doubling in price, reduced component quality and premature discontinuation of the top end commercial equipment in the last few years there is now a strong movement towards custom rod building on cutting edge rod blanks. Built to the casting style, specification, colour and budget of the owners choice, tailored rods are quickly becoming more desirable and fishable than their commercial counterparts.

Richard Lyon-Wilson is one of the UK’s most exciting rod builders. He sources quality materials from around the world to create personalized and bespoke fishing rods for all sport and game fishing options.

I currently own and fish fly rods built on the MHX blanks in both their Traditional and Native ranges for both fresh and saltwater applications. They are now the rods I reach for every time I’m going fishing. From my experience Richard is clearly one of the brightest and most professional enthusiasts working in this field and is a joy to deal with. I highly recommend his services and products.

Owner, guide, instructor at www.catchafish.net guide services and The Western Caribbean Fly Fishing School, Mahahual, Mexico.

I am lucky enough to have been guided on a few occasions now by Richard Lyon-Wilson. Richard is incredibly knowledgeable about fishing generally but particularly bass and the Dorset coast. He has worked with fish and fishing all his life and is a skilled angler with a lovely relaxed attitude. Fishing with Richard is a massive learning experience and always a joy. When fishing with Richard I have tried a number of methods and have always caught fish. He has encouraged me to try surface fishing with poppers which I have found to be really enjoyable. He is a sensible chap with a good eye to safety and is one of the nicest most generous people you will ever meet. I thoroughly recommend Richard as a guide and know that anyone who is lucky enough to be guided by him will be much the better for the experience.

I was fortunate enough to be lent a custom built rod to test while in Venezuela fishing, beautifully crafted by @thereelbassfisher.
MHx Native...................Nope, I had never herd of them either.
If you have, then they are probably the best kept secret yet!
The craftsmanship that has gone into this rod is incredible, the blanks are a very inoffensive grey colour and multicoloured whippings add a very subtle but funky finish. Full wells cork handle and a stainless reel seat, with double locking rings on the back will ensure a lifetime of use without your reel dropping off in to water after rattling loose.
So how does it perform?..............I’ve fished with more rods than I dare to remember, and I can honestly say this one is up there with the top end of the market, I wouldn’t bother posting anything about it if I thought it was a bag of shit!
The 8wt I was lent (It might never get given back 😂) has a medium fast action. It’s not too rigid, so using lighter tippets won’t get you snapped off on the strike, but still has enough grunt in the mid section of the blank to put the brakes on the liveliest of bonefish, it would make an amazing pike/bass rod.
Casting is virtually effortless, as with every rod if you haven’t got the right line, life is made very hard indeed.
This was tried with both 8 and 9wt lines, it loved the Rio bonefish 9wt line more than the 8wt, and every final cast, only a few turns of fly line were left on the reel.
If you are interested in a customised outfit get in touch with Rich @thereelbassfisher I can’t wait to try a lighter weight on some Trout (if I ever make it home alive 🌴🏴‍☠️😂) Also a massive thanks to @hector_flyfish for the incredible flies he tied me for my trip, another highly recommend craftsman. Looking forward to nailing a few Bass on them when 🤞 I return. .

Kind regards
